I WAS IN my barracks room shining my shoes on the morning of 9/11 when an announcement came over the loudspeaker that everyone should report back to their barracks rooms.

Of course, I was among tens of millions who would soon realize their lives were forever changed that morning. Whether you lost a family member, a loved one, or knew someone who had, America was never the same after the bright sun rose on the East Coast that morning.

As soon as I’d heard about the World Trade Center and then the Pentagon and that field in Pennsylvania, I thought back to what my ROTC advisor had said about enemies in Iraq and other countries in that part of the world. I started seeing my future more clearly that day, located somewhere where the same blazing sun now in Charleston had already set in the sand.

I was glad to hear that no Citadel grads had died in New York, DC, or Pennsylvania on that bleak day—at least as far as anyone knew thus far. However, I wasn’t naïve enough to believe that there would be no Citadel grad bloodshed in coming days, months, and even years. I knew that day that the blood could be that of my classmates—and even mine.
